Electrician Footwear

Electrician footwear is a type of PPE specially developed for professionals working in activities with a risk of direct or indirect contact with electricity.
Its main characteristic is providing electrical insulation, protecting the user against shocks in low-voltage situations, as established by technical safety standards.
This footwear is manufactured using non-conductive materials, ensuring that electrical current is not transmitted to the worker's body. According to the ABNT NBR 16603 standard, this footwear must be used exclusively in dry environments and offers electrical insulation limited to 500 volts, ensuring safety in low-voltage conditions.
In addition to shock protection, electrician footwear also delivers comfort, resistance, and durability, making it indispensable in electrical maintenance activities, civil construction, and industrial applications.

Benefits
Electrical Hazards
Power generation, transmission, distribution, and electrical maintenance activities involve hazards such as electric shock, electric arc, and flash fire, which can cause severe burns, nerve tissue damage, heart rate alterations, and other effects on the body. Therefore, in addition to using the appropriate PPE for each activity, it is essential to verify whether the footwear's Certificate of Approval (CA) covers the necessary protection for the work to be performed.
Construction Requirements
ABNT NBR 16603:2017 establishes specific requirements for the construction of electrical insulating footwear. Among them, certain areas of the upper must remain free of seams, including the region from the instep to the edge. The standard also disallows the use of metallic components in the footwear, such as steel shanks, eyelets, buckles, zippers, nails, and metal rivets. These requirements aim to enhance the electrical insulation of safety, protective, and occupational footwear intended for this type of activity.
Symbology and Electrical Resistance
The standard establishes the symbols SI, PI, and OI, referring, respectively, to the categories electrical insulating safety, electrical insulating protection, and electrical insulating occupational. Among the technical requirements, the electrical resistance of the PPE must be greater than 1,000 MΩ. To evaluate electrical insulation, the footwear must withstand the application of 14,000 V (rms), at 60 Hz, for 1 minute, with a maximum leakage current of 0.5 mA. It is important to emphasize that 14,000 V corresponds to the voltage applied during testing and not the permitted voltage for footwear use. As specified by the standard, the working voltage is limited to 500 V.
Identification
The footwear must externally display the symbol corresponding to resistance to electric shock, as well as the “500 V” marking and the word “dry”, indicating the conditions intended for its use. These markings facilitate the recognition of the product's protective characteristics and assist in selecting the appropriate footwear for the task.
